About the Book

Rather than presenting leadership as a position, personality type, or collection of management techniques, the book treats it as a journey. Every journey begins with the person behind the wheel.

Before leaders can guide other people effectively, they need to understand their own energy, habits, reactions, values, purpose, confidence, and blind spots. From there, the road widens. Leadership becomes increasingly about understanding why people think differently, listening well, creating conditions in which people feel able to contribute, adapting to different situations, coordinating teams, making better decisions together, responding to change, using AI responsibly, connecting across boundaries, and developing leadership in others.

The book is organized around an extended road-journey metaphor, but the ideas are firmly grounded in everyday leadership situations. Each chapter combines stories, practical frameworks, personal experiences, reflection activities, AI-supported exercises, Leadership Dashboard Checks, and memorable Road Signs.
Lead yourself → Understand people → Lead teams → Navigate change → Build beyond yourself

The aim is not simply to help readers become more effective leaders themselves. It is to help them create environments, relationships, teams, and communities in which other people can succeed too.

Dr. Robert Stroud

Dr. Robert Stroud

Dr. Robert Stroud is an international leader, entrepreneur, professor, speaker, and community builder with more than 25 years of experience building organizations, leading teams, and developing people across the UK, USA, and Japan.

His leadership journey has taken him from establishing and growing businesses and organizations to leading international teams, creating global communities, developing partnerships, and bringing together people from different cultures, professions, and backgrounds. These experiences, including the successes, difficult decisions, unexpected challenges, and mistakes along the way, form the foundation of The Leadership Roadmap.

Known as a Community Architect, Robert is the founder of the international Culture Club community, founder and editor of The University Grapevine (TUG), and co-founder of Voices of Change (VOC). Across these initiatives, he has created opportunities for people around the world to connect, collaborate, develop, and lead.

Robert is also a professor at Hosei University in Tokyo and holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, UK. His academic work adds another dimension to his leadership experience, particularly in understanding communication, culture, human connection, and the changing role of artificial intelligence.

A TEDx speaker and international presenter, Robert believes leadership is not defined by a title or by how many people follow you, but by what your leadership enables other people to become.

The Leadership Roadmap brings together the lessons of his own continuing leadership journey and the people who have helped shape it along the way.

Praise for the Book

“
“The Leadership Roadmap is refreshingly practical — every idea comes with tools you can actually use. I especially like how the chapters progress: starting with yourself, then people, teams, the wider world, and finally beyond. Dr. Robert Stroud gives you a way to build leadership step by step, in real situations. A book worth keeping close.”
Natsuyo Lipschutz CSP, MBA, Keynote Speaker and Cross-Cultural Team Communication Strategist, USA
“
“In today’s world of quick fixes and a plethora of ‘how-to’ books, The Leadership Roadmap is a refreshing change in considering the principles of leadership by using the metaphor of a developmental route. Using a story-based approach combined with self-reflection, leadership tools, and practical applications this publication is a must-have for leaders of today.”
Marjorie Rosenberg IATEFL past president, Austria
“
“The Leadership Roadmap turns leadership into something you can actually picture. The road-journey metaphor and visual tools (e.g., the Dashboard, the GPS, the Cultural Windshield, the Bridge Builder) give abstract ideas a shape that stays with you and a language you can bring into your everyday practice.”
Prof. Dr. Osman Solmaz TESOL Teacher of the Year 2025, Türkiye
“
“The Leadership Roadmap makes leadership practical without making it simplistic. Its road-based models turn complex ideas into memorable tools, while keeping people, judgment, and relationships at the center. It is a timely, accessible guide for leaders navigating change across many professional contexts.”
Dr. Le Dinh Bao Quoc Founder & CEO, Pro.Ed Education Solutions, Vietnam
“
“The Leadership Roadmap brings leadership back to people: noticing, listening, reflecting, asking better questions and being willing to change direction. It’s a practical, human approach to thinking about how we lead others and, just as importantly, how we understand ourselves. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. Very often, it starts with asking better questions.”
Harry Waters Founder of Renewable English and TEDx Speaker, Spain
“
“Dr. Stroud has done what most leadership books skip: turned good ideas into tools leaders can actually pick up and use. The Dashboard, the Gearbox, the Mirror Check, practical, memorable, and built for Monday morning, not just for reading.”
Veejay Madhavan CEO, Director and Human–AI Leadership Researcher, Singapore
